In 2007 there were 19,164 applications for asylum (first-time applications).
In 2008 there were 22,085 applications for asylum (first-time applications).
In 2009 there were 27,649 applications for asylum (first-time applications).
In 2010 there were 41,332 applications for asylum (first-time applications).

In 2011, there were 45,098 applications for asylum (first-time applications). This constitutes an increase of 11 per cent compared to the previous year.

The main countries of origin for first-time asylum applications in 2009 were Iraq (6,538), Afghanistan (3,375) and Turkey (1,429), Kosovo (1,400).
In 2010, the main countries of origin of asylum seekers were Afghanistan (5,905), Iraq (5,555), Serbia (4,978), Iran (2,475), the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (2,466) and Somalia (2,235).

In 2011, the main countries of origin were Afghanistan (7,767), Iraq (5,831), Serbia (4,579), Iran (3,352), Syria (2,634) and Pakistan (2,539).
