Qualitative Info

A 2010 qualitative research report mentions one project as a good practice and several positive initiatives that had been applied by one teacher, without being part of a structural intervention.

During 2004-2010, Pestalozzi Foundation in partnership with Pestalozzi Children's Foundation from Switzerland implemented a project in 15 multiethnic schools from 3 regions of Romania: Harghita, Buzau and Bucharest - „Mozaic – comunicare şi educaţie interculturală în comunităţi multietnice” (Mozaic - intercultural communication and education in multiethnic communities). The target group was children and youth who are socialy, educationaly and economicaly disadvantaged, belonging to different ethnic groups, their teachers, parents and local communities. The project aimed to improve communication, trust, understanding, solidarity and inter-ethnic tolerance, to facilitate free access to education and promote the children's freedom of expression through multicultural and diversity activities, to establish 3 multicultural education centers where children belonging to different ethnic groups can express their personality according to their ethnic identity and engage into exchanges with other ethnic groups. Among other results of this project, 690 teachers and 6300 children were trained in intercultural education, the rate of school enrollnment of children belonging to disadvantaged categories increased with 15% and the drop-out rate was diminished with 10%.
