Qualitative Info

Despite the fact that a clear gap in employment between the Roma and majority population, there is no definite data regarding Roma unemployment as compared to majority unemployment. The World Bank statistics, quoting a UNDP report published in 2006, place Roma unemployment rate in Romania at 44 per cent. [1] A recent Romanian research study (including a survey on 1537 self-identified Roma with a stated 2.5 margin of error) places Roma employment rate at 27 per cent while 20 per cent of those surveyed perform occasional economic activities (they had initially declared they have no occupation or are working in the household). The employment rate for majority population, according to the same study, is of 64.6 in 2010. [2]

According to the new 2011 Roma inclusion strategy, citing a report drafted under the Romanian Presidency in 2009, about 53% of the Roma men and 23% of the Roma women are engaged in paid work; 36% of these men have a salary as compared to 77% of majority men. Of all adult population, 19% of Roma men and 11% of Roma women are employed as compared to 40% of men and 31% of women of other ethnicities. [3]
