The Ombudsman for Minorities supervises compliance with the prohibition of ethnic discrimination under the Non-Discrimination Act, transposing the racial equality and employment equality directives into national legislation in Finland. The Ombudsman aims to prevent ethnic discrimination and promote equality in a number of different ways. She also intervenes in discrimination by issuing statements and opinions.

The Ombudsman for Minorities is an independent authority. The Office of the Ombudsman for Minorities is located administratively within the Ministry of the Interior
