Following a local festival in a small town of Saxony on 18 August 2007, a mob of about 50 mostly young Germans chased eight Indian men, who sought shelter in a nearby restaurant. The mob kicked in the door of the restaurant and all eight Indian men were injured. Around 70 police men were needed to regain control of the situation. Some of the offenders shouted xenophobic slogans. The public prosecutor expressed doubts that the incident was a planned right-wing extremist act. The incident received a great deal of public, media and political attention and raised a debate about racist violence in eastern Germany.
