Immigration was on a continuous rise since the mid nineties, but had generally decreased since 2009 as a result of the financial crises. The overall number of foreigners living in Portugal represented around 4,2% of the population in 2010. This population is mainly composed of low skilled workers, mostly from Brazil and Ukraine, which have a non-negligible impact in the Portuguese economy and in the social security system. Estimates on Roma population point to around 40.000 individuals.
